Hemmings Motor News
Special projects for Hemmings Motor News, including event lettering, icons, t-shirt graphics, and program cover illustration.
Hemmings Cruise-Ins
Every summer Hemmings invites its readers to bring their classic cars to Bennington, Vermont for their annual bi-weekly cruise-ins. I lettered two logos for its coverage in Hemmings Motor News.
Hemmings Muscle Machines
In October 2014 Hemmings Muscle Machines underwent a long-overdue restoration. Our challenge was to refresh the 10 year old magazine in a way that was evolutionary, not revolutionary.
We began this process by identifying the most obvious pieces that needed updating, with the nameplate taking top priority. We removed gratuitous effects and condensed the logo into a sleeker, more modern lockup.
We simplified the cover by eliminating additional graphic elements and limiting the number of typefaces.
The October 2015 cover featured a one-off instance of hand-lettering.
I developed a suite of icons for use alongside section headers, which were now marked throughout the magazine with a prominent color band. We modified the existing 5-column grid to a 7-column grid, allowing for pull quotes and other callout boxes an opportunity to sit apart from the main text.
Concours d'Elegance
For the annual Hemmings Concours d’Elegance program, I illustrated each cover in a style reminiscent of the era in which the featured marques were produced.
